In 2005, Italian car designer Fabrizio Giugiaro, from the world renowned Giugiaro car design family, went to the Ford Motor Company with a passion to design a future concept inspired by the sixth generation Ford Mustang. As the styling director of Italdesign – Giugiaro S.P.A., Fabrizio is continuing the Italdesign design tradition known for his bold designs for Fiat, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Volkswagen, Mazda, Lotus and Bugatti. The original Giugiaro, Giorgetto, was instrumental in designing the 1965 Bertone Mustang and the Chevrolet Corvette Moray.
The result of Italdesign’s years of experience in car design and collaboration with Ford is the Giugiaro Mustang concept car that debuted at the 2006 Los Angeles International Auto Show.
Styling
Bringing European styling to this All-American icon, Italdesign has turned the Mustang into a refined and intimidating sports car. The stock Mustang is primarily an option for the general public; an extremely cool car, boastful engine and great interior; so Giugario decided to change the styling and design of both the interior and the exterior to help the present day Mustang look more like a stallion and less like a pony. The new car is more compact and tapered with a smaller rear overhang, but its wider by 30 mm (1.2 in) at the front, and by 80 mm (3.1 in) at the rear giving it a more aggressive look. A huge single pane forms the windscreen and the roof which is made from a unique type of crystal that filters out 100% of UVA rays, yet does not polarize visible light. The doors are touch operated and when opened raise from the A-pillar at a 45 degree angle, similar to the classic Lamborghini's scissor doors. Inside, the interior has been largely redone, now trimmed in sleek aluminum and fine leather trim. The dash-board, door panels, dials & knobs, and gear lever have all been re-done with finer materials to look more modern, aggressive and sleek. New periscope-style air-conditioning vents have also been installed, along with a new seat trim that harkens to the Pony Car’s name with furred horsehides.
Engine
The Giugiaro Mustang is powered by a the same 4.6L V8 from the Mustang GT, but it receives additional power from a twin-screw supercharger. The engine is also uniquely tuned by Italdesign and fitted with fuel injectors from the Ford GT. The engine is given more fresh air through an air intake with a 95 mm (3.7 in) larger mass air meter and a conical air filter. Exhaust flow is improved using an X-pipe and Ford Racing mufflers.
All these power improvements add up to the cars ability to produce over 500 hp at 11psi of boost from the supercharger.
Technical Details
The Giugiaro Mustang lives up to its performance heritage. Equipped with a custom Ford Racing Handling Pack, the Giugiaro Mustang features new Dynamic-tuned dampers, lower springs, and thicker anti-sway bars. This allows the car to handle extremely well and lowers the ride height by 1.5 in (38 mm).
